Finlay's story

Finlay Hewitt

It all happened on Monday 17 August when Finlay, aged 4, was playing at a friend's house and fell off a toy car and bumped his head.

He seemed fine after it happened, but four hours later he felt sleepy and then started being sick.

We called NHS Direct and they said we should call an ambulance.

We did, and the ambulance took him straight to the Emergency Department at The Children's Hospital in Sheffield.

We initially thought it was concussion, but the consultant who saw him wasn't happy with the way his eyes looked and wanted him to have a CT scan straight away - it was all very quick.

Finlay had the scan and it showed that he had a life-threatening bleed on his brain - he had ruptured a blood vessel. He was taken straight into the operating theatre for emergency surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain.

The operation went well and Finlay was transferred onto the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) afterwards.

He spent a couple of days on ICU and then a couple of days on one of the wards, then amazingly, he was able to come home.

Finlay is now the same bubbly four-year-old he was before his illness, and we cannot thank the hospital enough for saving our son.

It all happened so fast and just shows how a CT scanner can help save a child's life.
